  4. Thank you for downloading our new beta of WebCompass 2.0.  Please read
  5. through this short README file so you can find out the latest
  6. information about the WebCompass 2.0 beta.  If you don't want to read
  7. the complete README, at the very least please refer to the KNOWN
  8. OUTSTANDING ISSUES section below before using WebCompass.

  10. INTRODUCTION
  11.  
  12. Quarterdeck WebCompass 2.0 is, in part, an intelligent search tool that
  13. allows you to find exactly what you are looking for on the Internet.
  14. Working in conjunction with popular search engines such as AltaVista,
  15. Yahoo, WebCrawler, Excite and Lycos, as well as many others, WebCompass
  16. 2.0  makes it easy to sort through the millions of pages of text
  17. currently existing on the Web.  However, WebCompass 2.0 is NOT JUST a
  18. search tool.  It's a complete research assistant,  summarizing and
  19. categorizing your information based on your own personal preferences,
  20. and making it permanently available in a robust database.  
  21.  
  22. There are a growing number of "search tools" being made available, but
  23. most are simply front-ends to search engines, allowing you to type in a
  24. search query that will go to all the supported engines at once.
  25. WebCompass 2.0, however, is the first program of its kind that makes its
  26. own summaries of the downloaded pages, and allows you to categorize your
  27. search results exactly the way you  want to organize the information.
  28. Also, while most search tools have built-in support for specific search
  29. engines, WebCompass 2.0 allows you to configure any search engine.
  30. We've already added support for about 20 search engines, but if you find
  31. another you like, simply add it to the list!

  34. the on-line help.

  37. INSTALLATION AND COMPATIBILITY NOTES
  38.  
  39. The following browsers are currently supported: -  Netscape Navigator
  40. v3.0 -  Microsoft Internet Explorer v3.0 (for Windows 95 and NT 4.0) and
  41. v1.5 (for Windows NT 3.51)
  42.  
  43. The list of pre-configured search resources in this beta was greatly expanded.
  44. To be able to use the added search resources, you will have to overwrite your 
  45. existing topic database. So, during install, choose to overwrite the database 
  46. when the installation routine prompts you to do so.
  47.  
  48. KNOWN OUTSTANDING ISSUES
  49.  
  50. Problem :  You are on a network within a firewall and are unable to add new
  51.        search resources due to an error message stating that
  52.        "http://localhost.<your domain name>:<a port number>" is not 
  53.        accessible.
  54. Solution:  follow the steps listed below:
  55.        Microsoft Internet Explorer: Go to the Connection tab in Internet
  56.        Explorer's Properties/Options. Click on Settings and add the word
  57.        "localhost" (without the quotation marks) to "Exceptions" area. 
  58.        Restart the browser.
  59.        Netscape Navigator: Go to the Proxies tab in Navigator's Network
  60.        Preferences. Click on View and add the word "localhost" (without the
  61.        quotation marks) to the "No Proxy For" area. Restart the browser.
  62.  
  63. Problem:   Can't install WebCompass 2.0 Beta. Install inaccurately
  64.            reports insufficient disk space.
  65. Solution:  Start by emptying the Recycle Bin. You can also delete all
  66.            files in the Temp directory. There are no other workarounds
  67.            available at this time.
  68.  
  69. Problem:   WebCompass launches a new copy of the browser every time I
  70.            view a topic or a document.
  71. Solution:  Make sure you are using the latest release of your browser.
  72.            If you are using a 2.x Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer,
  73.            upgrade to the 3.0 version.
  74.  
  75. Problem:   The WebCompass installation doesn't detect Netscape Navigator
  76.            or Internet Explorer.
  77. Solution:  Make sure you are using the latest release of your browser.
  78.            WebCompass supports only Netscape Navigator 3.0 and Internet
  79.            Explorer 3.0
  80.  
  81. Problem:   Microsoft C++ Runtime Library: RUNTIME ERROR!
  82.            C:\QUARTERDECK\WEBCOMPASS\2.0\WC20.EXE
  83.            ABNORMAL PROGRAM TERMINATION
  84. Solution:  We have occasionally seen this error when the DAO was not
  85.            updated upon installation of WebCompass.  Please reinstall
  86.            and when asked to update the DAO, click "yes."  If you still
  87.            get this error message please let us know.
  88.  
  89. Problem:   While using a LAN, "Search the Web" queries return no 
  90.            information and the Agent goes idle.
  91. Solution:  Your LAN probably uses a SOCKS firewall and WebCompass is 
  92.            not compatible with SOCKS firewalls at this point.
  93.  
  94. Problem:   When going through a firewall with Netscape or Internet 
  95.            Explorer I am asked for a password, but this does not happen 
  96.            with WebCompass and I can't get through.
  97. Solution:  Firewall authorization support is not currently implemented 
  98.            in WebCompass.
  99.  
  100. Problem:   You get numerous "Cannot register windowclass for asynch 
  101.            sockets" error messages.
  102. Solution:  WebCompass works only with the Microsoft built-in Dial-Up 
  103.            Networking, if you are using a 3rd-party or 16-bit Winsock, 
  104.            you will need to configure the Microsoft Dial-Up Networking 
  105.            and use it instead.
